Hourly Wage: $16.20 (with a bonus for staff who are fully bilingual in English and French)

Position Summary

Visitor Services Operatives carry out fee collection and visitor orientation duties, run some modern exhibits and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre, and participate in and support some interpretive programs and demonstrations. They work at both the Halifax Citadel and Georges Island National Historic Sites. Visitor Services Operatives also work closely with many of the Halifax Citadel Society’s partner organizations at both sites.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates kiosks, processes entrance fees for visitors and groups, and maintains a cash float.
  • Operates modern exhibits and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre.
  • Distributes brochures and provides visitor reception and orientation services.
  • Delivers, participates in, and/or supports interpretive programming and demonstrations.
  • Addresses visitors’ concerns and collects and records visitors’ comments and other feedback.
  • Monitors visitors’ adherence to site rules, regulations, and safety practices.
  • Carries out basic inspections of visitor areas, reports maintenance issues, and conducts basic maintenance/cleaning tasks of work spaces.
  • Cleans some visitor facilities at Georges Island NHS.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

Education

  • A high school diploma (or GED) is required.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a customer service role is an asset.
  • Previous experience with cash handling and/or point of sale systems is an asset.

Language

  • The ability to communicate fluently in English is required.
  • The ability to communicate fluently in French is an asset, but not required.

Skills & Abilities

  • The ability to work efficiently as part of a team, both independently and in small groups.
  • The ability to interact and communicate with members of the public in an efficient, friendly, and professional manner.

Conditions of Employment

  • Willingness to wear HCS uniforms, and to adhere to associated personal appearance standards.
  • Willingness to travel between work locations on foot and in small boats, and work in semi-isolated locations with limited infrastructure.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance.

Working Conditions

  • Works indoors in admission kiosks, modern visitor exhibits, and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre.
  • Works outdoors in all weather conditions, standing for long periods of time, at the Halifax Citadel and on Georges Island.
  • Also works inside historic fortifications in both period-accurate and modern spaces.
  • Works a variable work schedule including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or overtime as required.
